Chagas Disease – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Chagas disease is a prevalent disorder happening in America. It is an infection produced by protozoan parasite. It causes inflammation of the skin tissues known as Chagomas. Such swelling can be produced in intestinal and heart muscles. The cause of this disease is endemic. It can be acquired if one goes to live in countries like of central, South America, and Mexico. Approximately 8-11 million persons are affected with this ailment in these countries.

These parasites gain an entry into skin of the sufferer through a bug which carries them. So, apart from the bites of the bug, these parasites can also be transferred through inhalation. When these parasites are introduced into the bodies, redness develops in the vicinity of the lips and the eyes which is their excreta. The Triatominae bugs, which cause this ailment, are known as kissing bugs. They have fetched this name because the color of the skin is altered due to extensive kissing. The parasites can also enter the organs after the bug bites. So, they multiply inside the organs. Here they produce fallacies like cardiac arrhythmias, which can also lead to death later. This ailment is found in people who live in below than average housing conditions, which act as the habitat of these bugs. When humans occupy such houses, they infiltrate the bug’s living space and get the disease.

Apart from humans, bugs can also transfer this disease to pets.

The incidence of this disease is distinct in different individuals. In some, it has no symptoms and has the duration of some weeks to almost two months. In the intermediate phase of this ailment, it does not have many symptoms and can exist for 10-20 years or even more. However, the chronic phase of this disease is more destructible which involves organ damage. This damage occurs in the heart and intestine although other organs can also bear the brunt. The symptoms of this phase exist for the lifetime of the victim. One of the most annoying symptoms is arrhythmatic heartbeats and palpitations. The patient can even experience fainting.

This chagas disease is accompanied with many other symptoms which include pain in the stomach along with constipation and a stretched colon. Even some problems in swallowing can exist because of it. Patient can also get a stroke because of this ailment. One can get rid of this disease through many methods. The first method is to ensure that patients are given antiparasitic treatments. This can ensure that they can be treated easily. However, now the use of these drugs has become controversial. In fact, the CD has said that adults who are more than 50 years of age cannot be treated with this drug. In fact, their treatments should be decided uniquely.

Although these drugs are beneficial for the intermediate state, they are no use in the chronic stage. However, treating this disease is necessary which even continues for the lifetime for the patient. Cardiac transplantation is important for patients who suffer from irregular heartbeat.

Can Telomere Length Predict Cancer Risk?

The Telomere Cancer Link:

Cancer is a disease that millions have died from and continue to struggle with on a daily basis. Up to this point, there was no saying who, when or how someone would fall into the horrific whirlwind illness of cancer. To many people’s amazement, researchers have found the length of a person’s telomere is in fact inversely associated with the risk of attaining, and dying from the disease.

The tips in red are the telomere section of DNA There has long been a struggle and fight to find a so-called cure for cancer. And while there is still no cure, doctors and researchers have long been looking for evidence to help predict cancer. If it were possible to predict who is more likely to develop the disease, there is no saying what could be done from there.

The problem has been a continuous battle to attempt to save millions of lives and it has unfortunately gone on with little success whatsoever up to this point. While the numbers vary from year to year, it has remained consistent that around 550,000 to 600,000 deaths occur every year from this horrific illness. Finally, there is hope for the future though.

The link between the telomere and Cancer

What researchers have found is that telomere length can actually play a role in predicting who is more or less likely to develop cancer. Research has found that those with the shortest telomeres were three times as likely to develop cancer over a 10-year period. This comes after studies comparing individuals with the longest telomeres versus the shortest.

Those who have the shortest telomere are not only more likely to develop cancer, but it has been found that they are also 11 times more likely to die from cancer. This research comes from a report published in the July 7 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. This research is not only important for predicting what could happen to certain individuals, but it could potentially help save lives in the long run.

It is important to note that at this point there is certainly no cure or prevention of the disease. Currently, all that is possible is potentially predicting cancer by looking at the telomere length. There is a possible association between short leukocyte telomere length and cancer formation. The assumption is that aging of the leukocytes can be reflected on the fact that short telomere length can actually impair the immune surveillance thus reducing the overall clearance of tumor cells.

Telomere study

The current analysis of the study included 787 individuals who ranged in ages from 40 to 79 who were free from cancer in 1995 and were followed until 2005. Telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes was then measured at baseline. And the miraculous findings held up that the telomere length actually could predict who had a far greater chance of falling ill to cancer.

Telomerase Nobel Prize In Physiology or Medicine 2009

This article will examine the problem that three scientists solved (Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider, and Jack Szostak) that eventually led to them winning the telomerase Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2009. Telomerase: the photocopier of cells

One of the biggest problems in biology is how a chromosome is able to be copied in a complete way during cell divisions and how those chromosomes were protected against degradation. Blackburn, Greider, and Szostak showed that the solution to the problem is the end of the chromosomes, the telomeres, and an enzyme that forms the telomeres, telomerase.

Telomerase in action

DNA molecules carry our genes and are packed into chromosomes and at the end of these chromosomes are telomeres. A unique DNA sequence that is found in telomeres is what protects the chromosomes from degradation. Furthermore, telomerase was found to be an enzyme that produces telomere DNA.

What this shows is that the ends of chromosomes are protected by telomeres that are produced by telomerase. With this knowledge scientists can conclude that as telomeres shorten, a cell ages. So, if telomerase activity is high, the telomere can maintain its length, and delay cellular senescence. This explains how cancer cells have eternal life and also how inherited diseases, which have defective telomerase, result in damaged cells.

These discoveries have had a huge affect on the scientific community. Scientists have been attempting to discover how we age and they have speculated that the shortening of telomeres is the reason for not only individual cells but for a whole organism. While telomeres are one factor, it turns out the aging process is far more complicated than previously thought.

Cancer and telomerase

Normal cells do not divide frequently, so they are rarely at a risk of shortening and have low telomerase activity. What the telomerase Nobel Prize explains though is that cancer cells have high levels of telomerase activity. What they hypothesize is cancer could be treated by eradicating telomerase.

Telomerase defects tied to other diseases

It is also been found that telomerase defects are a leading cause of inherited diseases such as some forms of congenital aplastic amenia. This disease is where insufficient cell divisions in the stem cells of the bone marrow lead to severe anemia. It is being hypothesized that we could fix these diseases by fixing the telomerase defect.

The discoveries by Blackburn, Greider, and Szostak were able to win them the telomerase Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2009. Their telomerase discoveries have greatly impacted the scientific community and will hopefully help solve the problems of aging, cancer, inherited diseases, and many more!

Treatments for Diabetes

Copyright (c) 2010 Sandra Graneau

Diabetes affects over 100,000,000 (one hundred million) people world wide. Billions of dollars are spent yearly to treat diabetes type 1 and 2. It is a costly sickness both in money spent to treat it and the number of deaths it causes yearly. Listed below are a few things used to treat this sickenss.

Diabeta

Diabeta helps to improve the peripheral utilization of glucose in the body and helps to increase the hepatic and muscle glycogen content. The product promotes beta cells repair and/or regeneration and therefore helps to increase the C-peptide level. Diabeta also minimizes the diabetes complications that are the long term and hazardous effects of the diseases as it reduces the glycated hemoglobin level, normalizes the micro-albuminuria and modulates the lipid profile. Diabeta is not going to lower down sugar immediately or cause hypoglycemia. The effects are slow but sustained and can be monitored.

Insulin

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas which allows body cells to absorb glucose, to covert it to energy. Marine Phytoplankton is found to be rich in omega 3 fatty acids which might help to reduce the amount of sugar in the diabetic patient’s bloodstream. Insulin-independent diabetes patients treated with 300-500 mg of berberine every day for one to five months (along with dietary control), showed positive reduction of blood sugar (23). Berberine is an active part of coptis and phellodendron, used in several diabetes prescriptions.

.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is the latest in a long list of herbs and spices that have been shown to provide surprising benefits in the treatment if illness. In case you have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, or know someone who has, explore the chance of cinnamon as an aid in treatment. Cinnamon is another great spice to consume. It lowers blood glucose levels, LDL (bad cholesterol), triglycerides and it is a spice that promotes heart and kidney health. Cinnamon contains polyphenols which helps the cells reply better to insulin. It’s also been found to be an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agent. Cinnamon – the dried and ground bark has been used as a natural diabetes treatment for hundreds of years. Diabetics have trouble processing the glucose in their body. Cinnamon, for example, has been seen to lower blood glucose levels even by using only a little amount This herb

Alphalpha

Herbal supplements like Alphalpha is a source of fiber as well and serves a dual purpose. Avoiding carbohydrates alone is not the solution to treating pre-disposed diabetes. Although the exact cause of why herbs have a positive effect on the body is not always known. Herbal supplements for diabetes ought to be a part of a holistic approach to treatment that addresses proper nutrition, a nice exercise program, and continued monitoring of blood glucose levels. It is important to visit a medical professional for proper diagnosis of diabetes and follow up treatment for the illness.

Bitter melon chemically contains a compound that is very much similar to insulin and sometimes also referred as p-insulin. Researches have shown that when it is taken continuously for some period has the ability to substitute the insulin in the body. Bitter melon is in effect for a diagnosis of diabetes. Bitter melon is used in solving menstruation issues in girls. It is also used in the treatment of sores, eczema, leprosy and large wounds.

Bitter melon is very effective for the treatment of diabetes. It is a tropical vegetable usually known as balsam pear. Bitter melon is a proven herb for treating diabetes. Bitter Melon bears female and male flowers that are yellow in color and grow at the axils of the leaves. The fruit of the vine is rectangular and with a rough exterior.

How Chronic Depression Can Affect Your Work

Chronic depression can affect anyone. Nearly 17 million Americans struggle with the disorder, and more often than not, they suffer without the help of a psychiatrist or psychiatric treatment. Depression not only makes the joys of family and friends seem dull, but it can significantly impact work life. In fact, it is estimated that depression accounts for as many as 400 million lost days of work a year in the United States. Recognizing the symptoms is the first step in addressing the problem, and getting back on the road to a happy, successful life.

Everyone has had a bad day; when that bad day turns into a bad week, and that bad week turns into a bad couple of months, it may be time to seek help from a psychiatrist. Early symptoms of depression can be as subtle as difficulty with concentrating and getting through the day-to-day routine, or may include intense feelings of sadness, guilt and pessimism. An inflicted person is more likely to have problems sleeping, increased irritability and a noticeable lack of energy.  Some people suffer aches and pains, loss of appetite and excessive crying. It is easy to see how the disorder can have a major impact on an employee’s work relationships, and can lead to reduced productivity, excessive absenteeism, costly mistakes and breakdowns on the job.

Depression is a serious condition, and left untreated, it can lead to estrangement from loved ones and co-workers, substance abuse, and other serious problems. While many people suffer from the disorder, for some it can be crippling. Fortunately, psychiatric treatment has come a long way. If you think you may have chronic depression, talk to your friends, family and employer about the problem, and schedule a consultation with a trained psychiatrist or psychologist. A mental health professional understands the impact that the condition is having on your family and work life, and can help you get back on your feet again.

Psychiatric treatment of depression can include periodic therapy, medication or some combination of the two. An exercise regimen and dietary changes may also help. In severe cases, hospitalization or in-patient therapy is sometimes necessary. However, nearly 80 percent of those with the disorder can be treated successfully, and the majority of them get the help they need without further disruptions to work and family life.

Besides therapy and lifestyle changes, there is a variety of medications on the market that have been shown to be effective treatments. If you think medication may be right for you, schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist. There is help out there. Don’t let depression hurt your family life and derail your career.

Better Social Life – How to Overcome Extreme Shyness.

Shyness is a major human problem. All over the world, people feel perturbed by this problem at one time or another. Shyness is known as social anxiety disorder (SAD). It can cause problems when a person just cannot move around people. It becomes a handicap for him/her. Such kind of shyness can cause people to stay away from crowds and gatherings. It can have huge impacts on their social lives and careers. The reasons, which lead to such shyness, are a low self-respect, depression and the aim to be perfect. Such socially shy people also avoid situations that require them to interact more. This includes opportunities of promotion.

A person can get rid of such shyness through many ways. Make sure that you try to inculcate yourself into the social set ups. Try to move out as frequently as you can. Generally, shyness is also accompanied by factors like excessive sweating of the hands and trembling. Such kind of reactions can be cured by biofeedback training.

Most of the shy people even try to avoid meeting people just across the street often veering into other directions.

Psychologists have often suggested that refraining from social encounters makes the condition of a person quite worse. This can worsen the shyness problem. In fact, it makes him believe in all those fears. Therefore, doctors motivate people to think about the situation in a new manner so that they are able to overcome the fear. Apart from that, they can also be made to partake in such situations so that they do not hate social exposure. Even behavioral therapy has been used on such people to get them out of the shyness problem. Most of the cognitive treatments focus on going into the past of a person so that he/she does not feel shy anymore. Maybe, some incidents of the past are responsible for his condition now.

Drugs are also useful for making a person combat this kind of a social anxiety. Such drugs include anti depressants. SSRO (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors), drugs can ensure that a person becomes more sociable. These drugs help a person in redoing the quantity of own thoughts which lead to such social shyness.

There can be amazing results once drugs are used to cure this problem. However, what when the drugs are not taken any more. A person will feel shyer. These days SSRI drugs are taken by so many people to reduce the social anxiety problems in North America. Sometimes, such drugs can have side effects like insomnia, sexual dysfunction and weight gain.

Even kids who have been victims of bullying at schools can become socially shy when they grow up. If someone has been criticised a lot due to bad parenting, he/she can also end up as someone who is socially shy. Curing such shyness in time is important because otherwise a person can also damage to himself/herself as an act of depression.

Excessive Sweating – Some Tips on How to Stop Sweating

Excessive sweating can produce so many problems for a person. It’s quite true that sweating produces a foul smell which makes a person frustrated. Therefore people try to find ways through which they can curb the problem of sweating. It’s very important that you introduce changes like wearing the right kind of attire to curb the problem of sweating.

Sometimes, you can also ensure that you change your clothes. For example, if you are going in a T shirt to the office which contains sweat the best part is to ensure that it’s changed to a business shirt as soon as you enter the premises. This would eliminate all the sweat produced on it. Even feeling relaxed can lead to a lower production of sweat. Even social anxiety can cause production of sweat. Often having a nice piece of cloth, which can be used to clean the sweat that has accumulated on your palms, is necessary. It can ensure that you do not produce the wrong impression on anyone who shakes hands with you.

Always carry a few items that can ensure that you can clean up an excessive production of sweat. You should also wear deodorant. Sweat generally accumulates on the feet. That is why it’s best to carry an extra pair of socks so that they can be worn instead of those pieces which have become soiled with sweat.

Commercially sold moist wipes can also serve as a right kind of remedy. They can ensure that you can wipe off the sweat accumulated on your face. An extra blouse can also come in quite handy once your prior one gets sweat on it all over. There is a medical name for high amount of sweating which is known as hyperhidrosis. It is always better that you show yourself up to a doctor to get his advice and cure the problem of sweating on time.

Using dress shields can also ensure that a person does not get any sweat on his/her body. This can ensure that his body remains odor free all the time. These dress shields can also be disposed off when necessary. You should be ready to take such items in the briefcase so that you can cope up with sweat. It’s also easy to undertake surgery to reduce the problem of sweating. But people don’t want to go under the knife for a minor problem as sweating. A lesser of the sufferers just opt for this surgery. People who opt for surgeries also tend to sweat just like before. Its better that you don’t think about sweating at any time because if you do then it will be produced more. Sweating is a vicious circle. It happens more when you care, and then your clothes get drenched with sweat. So, it’s best to stay calm and not bother about sweating.

Cataracts – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Cataracts are a severe eye inflicted problem that can make life miserable for people. Cataracts can be caused due to age and diseases like diabetes.

One can eliminate the symptoms of this ailment through anti glare sunglasses. However, surgery is quite effective when these measures do not yield any results. A victim can take an intelligent decision about the option of surgery after evaluating its pros and cons. The eye care specialist can aid him in taking this decision. Since cataract, impairs the normal flow of life by reducing and eliminating vision, its timely rectification is necessary. One can postpone the decision to have surgery but it only makes the matters worse by ruining the vision. It also becomes tougher to conduct surgery when the cataract has existed for a long time. Sometimes, treating this problem is necessary even if it does not obstruct vision. It can make it impossible for the doctor to check another eye for problems like muscle loss due to ageing.

Therefore, any person above the age of 40 can develop cataracts. However, one has to be at least 60 years old, so that cataracts can also impair the vision. Common symptoms of this ailment are hazed vision, fading of colors when you see them and a weak night vision.

Cataract generally occurs in old people when they have developed eye ailments like glaucoma. They can also be caused due to consumption of steroids. Sometimes, eyes can get hurt in accidents, which can lead to an incidence of this ailment after years.

There are many reasons behind the occurrence of cataract. Apart from factors like ageing, this disease can also occur due to genetic factors. Congenital cataract can happen to babies. However, this kind of cataract does not have an adverse impact on vision. If it has, a person might require an eye transplant surgery, which involves replacement of both eye lenses. Even exposure to radiation can also produce this ailment.

A person can also suffer from double vision. He/she can see several images of the same object. In fact, if a person wears prescription glasses, then his number increases frequently. Cataract can be detected through complex medical exams. Such exams can reveal how well you can see from different distances. Such tests are visual acuity test, tonometry and dilated eye exam. In the former, an eye chart is used to measure your eyesight. In the dilated eye exam, the eye pupil is stretched through drops. After that, the eye specialist inspects the retina through a magnifying lens to find any eye damage. The vision is not normal after this exam is over. In fact, the near vision is obscure for hours. In the last kind of test, tonometry, an instrument is used to gauge the eye pressure. Eye drops that reduce the pain are added before commencing the test. In this ailment, a clump forms on the pupil of the eye

Nasal breathing from the diaphragm often proves to be an effective means of treating anxiety and panic attacks.

I. Reasons Why Breathing Matters for Anxiety and Panic

In the immediate presence of real danger, a person’s sense of anxiety is amplified. Stress hormones increase in the blood stream, heartbeat and breathing rate rise. In other words, the body quickly prepares for a fight or flight exertion.

Panic attacks follow with similar emotional and bodily reactions, but they are irrational at least in that there is no real and imminent danger justifying fight or flight. The panic attack response is thus ineffective, even counter-productive.

More rapid breathing, as one effect of heightened anxiety, can supply the muscles and organs with the extra oxygen needed to respond to a real danger. But in the case of panic and irrational anxiety, it alters the appropriate oxygen/carbon dioxide ratio in the brain, which then causes greater anxiety.

Hyperventilation has the effect of deceasing the diameter of blood vessels and hence blood flow. Decreased blood flow causes dizziness, a numb feeling in the extremities, and a sense of unreality. These effects of over-breathing typically further contribute to the rising spiral of fear and panic.

And typically, self-conscious slowing of breathing during an attack helps improve the oxygen/carbon dioxide ratio, thus reducing symptoms that increase anxiety level. And slow and controlled breathing distracts the mind from anxiety-inducing “what if” and morbid thoughts.

Also worth noting is that often panic attack sufferers knowingly or unknowingly exist in a heightened state of anxiety, and thus that they breathe a bit more than is best for their physical activity level–just not as much as during a panic attack. A jump to panic mode is then relatively easy to achieve!

II. Methods of Breathing to Reduce Anxiety and Panic

Exercises useful in reducing breathing rate and feelings of fear are simple and easy, although over time they require focus and discipline both for habit-forming practice and for use during an anxiety attack.

Those with heightened anxiety levels, like those suffering from a wide variety of health-related stresses, often breathe through the mouth. Mouth breathing makes hyperventilation easier and decreases the efficiency of oxygen/carbon dioxide flow in comparison to nasal breathing. Often mouth breathing is the method to which the person has become most accustomed, and so a bit of retraining become necessary with exercises self-consciously practiced regularly over a period of time.

Another typical poor practice is shallow breathing emphasizing the portion of the lungs in the upper rib cage. This is common especially for people with sedentary lifestyles who, for example, sit for many hours of most days of the week in a classroom, library, or business office. Much of the lungs is not well used.

Below the lungs on both sides lies a thin muscular sheath called the “diaphragm.” Someone using the diaphragm to breathe has his or her stomach area rise and fall with each inhalation and exhalation–like a baby does. Breathing this way uses the whole lung capacity from top to bottom.

Nasal breathing from the diaphragm discourages hyperventilation and increases efficiency with respect to mouth breathing. One can breath slower and feel less or no dizziness or numbness.

III. A Routine for Teaching Oneself Proper Breathing

A breathing exercises plan geared toward reducing anxiety level follows.

1) Schedule five minutes at least once each morning and once each evening. Four or more times is preferable, but it is better to be consistent with fewer times than inconsistent with more. Write the times on your calendar for the same times each day. This will help one be consistent and develop a habit.

2) Put yourself in a quiet and comfortable place. Unplug or remove yourself from distracting electronic  gadgets–phone, internet, things from which one can hear music, TV, DVD player, and so on. Do not think about what you need to do for the day or what you did. Relax your neck and shoulders.

You may allow yourself a watch or time piece with a seconds hand or that counts seconds.

3) In the beginning, one must take care to know one is breathing using the diaphragm. This can be verified by holding hands over the abdomen, below the rib cage. The abdomen should rise when inhaling and fall when exhaling. If the rise and fall stops, one has started to breathe improperly from the upper rib cage again.

4) Inhale through your nose from the bottom of your lungs using your diaphragm. Inhale this way for a count of four seconds–counting “one, one thousand, two, one thousand” and so on in order to approximate the seconds or use a watch.

5) Pause briefly before exhaling. Exhale slowly over a three or four second interval parallel to the inhale cycle. Pause briefly and repeat.

6) Keep going for four or five minutes.

7) Repeat the process twice a day, morning and evening as noted for five or six weeks to develop a habit and to begin training oneself so as to make slow, controlled breathing almost second nature when one undergoes a panic attack or when one feels anxiety levels rising.

Do you feel any better? Make a note and reward yourself for successes.

Male dysfunction (or male impotence) is the inability to achieve or maintain male hardness suitable for sexual pleasure. Men who experience this problem should visit their doctor. Male sex problems are common in adult men. In fact, almost all men experience occasional difficulty getting or maintaining any form of hardness. Dysfunction in men is a medical condition often caused by other health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and trauma. The physical risk factors for ED fall into five main groups: Vascular disorders – circulatory problems that interfere with blood supply to the male sex organ including hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), diabetes, high blood pressure and abnormally raised blood cholesterol

What are some of the causes of Impotence?

Male impotence affects over 15 million men in the US. Job stress, depression, and financial worries all contribute to male sexual impotence. It can be caused from many different conditions that are both mental and physical. The foundations of these often are a result of accidents and/or diseases. Impotence is a sexual dysfunction which relates to difficulty in achieving and maintaining male hardness. Currently, impotence is a broad-ranging problem of social, psychological, and medical significance.

This problem can also come about if the nerves that control blood flow to the male sex organ become injured. Male impotence is now common problem in men. Male impotence is not a disease. Male impotence affects approximately 30 million men each year; it can happen to men of any age and ethnic background. Although this dysfunction was historically regarded as a natural part of aging, medical research has concluded that it is not, in fact, an unavoidable side effect of the aging process.

Seeking help

Male sex dysfunction doesn’t have to be a part of getting older. It’s true that as you get older, you may need more stimulation to get hard for sexual pleasure. This problem largely goes untreated because only one out of 20 seeks medical help. Men are often embarrassed about being impotent and most of the time, they prefer to avoid sex rather than seek treatment.

ED was assumed to be simply a natural part of growing older, and remedies for impotence were restricted to focused areas where herbal lore included treating symptoms of dysfunction. Fortunately, medical research has been conducted in the last several decades into impotence causes and possible cures. ED problems and premature ejaculation will be a thing of the past. ED drugs are normally recommended to be taken an hour before intercourse. Whenever men decide to have sex, they take the recommended drug at least an hour prior to it.

ED affects millions of men. Although in the past it was commonly believed to be due to psychological problems, it is now known that 80 to 90 percent of impotence is caused by physical problems, usually related to the blood supply of the male organ. Male dysfunction can be devastating for men and for their partners. A good sexual history and focused physical examination can provide clues as to whether the underlying cause is psychogenic or organic

Hair Loss – can Scarring Alopecia Heal?

Scarring alopecia, also known as cicatricial alopecia, refers to a collection of hair loss disorders that may be diagnosed in up to 3 percent of hair loss patients. It occurs worldwide in otherwise healthy men and women of all ages.

While there are many forms of scarring alopecia, the most common theme is a potentially permanent and irreversible destruction of hair follicles and their replacement with scar tissue.

Most forms of scarring alopecia first occur as small patches of hair loss that may expand with time. In some cases the hair loss is gradual, without noticeable symptoms, and may go unnoticed for a long time. In other instances, the hair loss is associated with severe itching, burning, and pain, and is rapidly progressive.

The scarring alopecia patches usually look a little different from alopecia areata in that the edges of the bald patches look more “ragged.” The destruction of the hair follicle occurs below the skin surface so there may not be much to actually see on the scalp skin surface other than patchy hair loss. Affected areas may be smooth and clean, or may have redness, scaling, increased or decreased pigmentation, or may have raised blisters with fluids or pus coming from the affected area.

These visual indicators may help with diagnosis, but it is difficult to diagnose a scarring alopecia just from the pattern of the hair loss and the nature of the scalp skin. Often when scarring alopecia is suspected, one or more skin biopsies are done to confirm the diagnosis and help identify the particular form of scarring alopecia. A small biopsy of 2 to 4 mm in diameter is taken and examined under a microscope. A pathologist or dermatologist will look for destruction of the hair follicles, scar tissue deep in the skin, and the presence and location of inflammation in relation to the hair follicles.

Often, the early stages of a scarring alopecia will have inflammatory cells around the hair follicles, which, many researchers believe, induces the destruction of the hair follicles and development of scar tissue. However, there is some argument about this among dermatologists, as sometimes a biopsy from a scarring alopecia-affected individual shows very little inflammation.

Scarring alopecia almost always burns out. The bald patches stop expanding and any inflammation, itching, burning, or pain goes away. In this end stage, another skin biopsy usually shows no inflammation around hair follicles. Bald areas usually have no more hair follicles. Sometimes, though, hair follicles, at least those at the periphery of a bald patch, are not completely destroyed and they can regrow, but often all that is left are just a few longitudinal scars deep in the skin to show where the hair follicles once were.

Female Hair Loss

Female pattern hair loss is the most common reason of hair loss in women and increases with advancing age. Not more than 35% of women go through life with a full head of hair. The histology of female pattern hair loss is identical to that of male androgenetic alopecia. While the clinical pattern of the hair loss differs between men, the response to oral antiandrogens suggests that female pattern hair loss is an androgen dependant condition, at least in the majority of cases.

Affected women may experience impaired social functioning and psychological distress. In most cases the diagnosis can be made clinically and the condition treated medically. While many women using oral antiandrogens and topical minoxidil will regrow some hair, early diagnosis and initiation of treatment is desirable as these treatments are more effective at arresting progression of hair loss than stimulating regrowth. Adjunctive non pharmacological treatment modalities such as counseling, cosmetic camouflage and hair transplantation are important measures for some patients.

Female pattern hair loss is a chronic progressive condition. All treatments need to be continued to maintain the effect. An initial therapeutic response often takes 12 or even 24 months. Given this delay, monitoring for treatment effect through clinical photography or standardized clinical severity scales is helpful.

Female pattern (FPHL) has emerged as the preferred term for androgenetic alopecia (AA) in females owing to the uncertain relationship between androgens and this entity (Olsen 2001). It is characterized by a reduction in hair density over the crown and frontal scalp with retention of the frontal hairline. In 1977, Ludwig clearly described the distinctive features of FPHL and classified it into three grades of severity referred to as Ludwig grades I, II, and III. The prevalence increases with age from approximately 12% amongst women aged between 20 and 29 years to over 50% of women over the age of 80. Hair loss in women is associated with significant psychological morbidity. Cash and colleagues (1993) suggested that women place a greater emphasis than men on physical appearances and outward attractiveness. Societal norms dictate that hair is an essential part of a woman’s sexuality and gender identity, and any hair loss generates feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety from a p  erception of diminished attractiveness. Women are more likely than men to have a lowered quality of life and to restrict social contacts as a result of hair loss. While men do consider androgenetic alopecia as an unwanted and stressful event that diminishes their body image satisfaction (studies indicate 50% of men with mild hair loss and 75% with moderate to severe hair loss report concern, society tends to regard hair loss in men as expected and normal due to the greater visibility of hair loss within men.

Current management options are limited, and even in positive responders, there is a significant time delay before improvement becomes apparent. Regardless of which option is chosen, sufficient time should be spent counseling the patient. While some women are content to be reassured that their hair loss is not a manifestation of a serious disease, many are sufficiently concerned by the prospect of going bald to seek active treatment.

When you know what genital herpes infection symptoms are, it is easier to understand the condition and how to take precautions. You should ensure to contact a medical professional for medical treatment to prevent the infection from spreading and to ease the discomfort. Suitable treatments will be prescribed once the doctor has diagnosed the condition.

Symptoms can show up within two to twenty days after initial contact with an infected person. The symptoms could remain for two weeks. There are some mild cases where the person would have no symptoms at all, especially with people who contract cold sores frequently. This is a strain of herpes virus. These people would be partly immune to the virus.

Within the Initial outbreak of the ailment, the person may get sores that would last for two to three weeks. They will not have antibodies to trigger the immune response, as this will be the first contract of the virus. Results would be more severe. Some of the symptoms that appear could easily be mistaken for a different condition.

Skin cells are attacked in their producing and multiplying stages by the virus. This can result in the skin being red and sensitive. In the genital area, you could find blisters and bumps. Initially blisters would be painful but then it will form a crust and a scab. When the skin redevelops new tissue, the sores will heal and disappear.

Symptoms of the genital herpes infection may be a painful outbreak of burning, itching and tingling lesions within the genital area. The affected person may experience their lymph glands be swollen and they suffer from muscle pain, fever and headaches. In certain cases, there might be discharge from the man’s organ or vagina or a burning sensation when urinating. Lower back pain is a common factor and they can experience burning sensations within the genitals.

About sixty percent of people would have genital HSV. This is a common asymptomatic viral shedding. Many people will experience no symptoms and have no idea they have it. This can still be transmitted to other people through sexual activity. This virus may recur, which results in blisters breaking out up to four times a year. Recurrences would be shorter and less severe than the first outbreak. Warning symptoms (prodromal symptoms) would appear before an outbreak. In some cases, you may experience post-herpetic neuralgia. This can result in pain or discomfort within the affected area during after the virus has run its course.

When you suspect that you have genital herpes infection symptoms, consult a health care professional. Treatments would be given to clinical diagnosis. Some treatments would contain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. This will work effectively to relief discomfort during the outbreak and the prodrome. Some people could mistake HSV-2 for yeast infections, insect bites, razor burns or ingrown hair follicles.

Does laser therapy always work?

Laser therapy can be used, with very few exceptions, on all patients, but one should remember that this form of treatment is no different from any other form of medical treatment. Not all patients react in the same way to laser therapy and one patient may not always react the same way, depending on the condition of the tissue and immune system. Often people ask  if there are different lasers for teeth than for hair treatment. Yes they are very different but at the same time very much alike. The laser is basically the same even though the wavelength  and the effect for treating hair loss is different than the laser used in dental work.

But let us look at anesthetic injections by way of comparison when we are talking dental side. So patients are thought to need double quantities of anesthetic, while others need very little. In some cases, the effects disappear very quickly, in others they remain for an unusual length of time. Even a patient who normally fit it easy to be fully anaesthetised may suffer when the dentist treats his deep pulpitis – in worse cases it may be that nothing helps.

In general terms, we can expect up to 80 percent of patients to respond positively to laser therapy, both teeth and against hair loss. If a patient does not respond to treatment, bear mind that the degree of success of the treatment is contingent on a number of parameters. A poor result can be due to too small a dosage, too great a dosage, incorrect diagnosis, too few treatment sessions, unsuitable pulse frequency or power density, etc. Remember – the more experienced practitioner, the more success he or she will have with laser therapy.

Experience shows that practitioners use laser therapy not only patients, but on themselves, on relatives and on friends, and maybe even treat complaints outside their own domain. The next step could be that practitioners may even begin treating their patients for non-odontological problems in which case they will appear to their patients as unusually skilled professionals, even if, by definition, they are working outside their normal sphere of business. Experience also shows that many practitioners have too much respect for the new tool in the beginning. Remember that it is only light! Bearing the few contra indications in mind, a great new field is now open up. And this far we have only seen the beginning in different possibilities.

Building Biceps

How to Build Huge Biceps Fast The first thing required of you as a display of strength of fitness is a good bulging bicep. No one outside the gym is likely to put you a bench to see how much weight you can “bench” though this is often the hallmark of strength inside the gym. Often, you will be asked you to flex a bicep. It is therefore important that you learn how to build huge biceps.

For some, building biceps is the easiest thing in the world. For others, it is the hardest thing in the world. It’s all in your genetic make up, but the good thing is that with the proper techniques you can build bigger biceps.

Indeed, strong firm arms have their place in the real world. And while all muscle groups are important, strong arms are perhaps the most frequently required part of your body when it comes to day-to-day tasks. And while biceps are just part of the equation for building big strong arms – triceps play a bigger part in overall arm size – they are most easily noticeable.

Biceps training requires a two-pronged approach: you need overall fullness as well as peak. You therefore need exercises that build mass, as well as one or two isolation exercises for detail and peak.

If you have set aside a day just for arm, it is advisable to start your workout with the bigger muscle-group, that is the triceps. Since triceps and biceps are opposing muscle-groups, you can train both effectively on the same day and in the same workout session.

If biceps are a weak spot for you, do not train biceps with back. Back exercises require the use of biceps; after a back workout you will not be able to train biceps effectively.

Exercises for Building Huge Biceps

Standing barbell or dumbbells curls: These are mass builders and should be the start of your biceps building routine. Start with either one and do three working sets after a warm set or two, pyramiding the weight up with each set. You should do a minimum of six repetitions on your last set (your heaviest).

Alternate or one arm dumbbell curls: This is also a mass building exercise with one distinct advantage, it lets you concentrate better as you work one arm only at a time. You can do these while seated or standing.

Preacher curls: These require the use of a special type of bench that resembles a pulpit (hence the name). This is an isolation exercise intended for building peak. Some bodybuilders alternate these with standing barbell curls as a starter to their biceps routine. Find what works for you. Preacher curls can also be done with a dumbbell one arm at a time.

Concentration curls: These are done with one arm at a time while seated on a bench. You rest the elbow of your working arm on the corresponding thigh. This is one of the greatest movements out there for creating peak.

Hammer curls: As the name suggests, these are done with a hammer driving down a nail motion, using dumbbells. They work the biceps as well as forearms. You can do these with both arms at the same time, one arm at a time, or alternating.

Pleura meothelioma has an effect on the liner of the lungs. This is not a primary kind of lung cancer; this is a cancer of the serous membranes. The effected cells line several organs in the middle of the body, which includes the lung area. Although pleura mesothelioma is regarded as the common of kind of the disease, it may affect the other organs as well.

The abdomen lining, peritoneum, surrounding the heart, pericardium, and then can spread to the lungs. While pleura mesothelioma is often referred to as asbestos lung cancer, it is incorrect. This particular cancer does not originate in the lungs but rather have metastasized to the lung.

Asbestosis is a type of asbestos lung disease that is in the lungs. Unfortunately it is often confused with pleura mesothelioma.

This kind of cancer malignancy, pleura mesothelioma, is brought on by asbestos breathing. The asbestos becomes imbedded in the lung lining, pleura, and over a long period of time due to inflammation, can become cancerous tumors. It can take as long as 20-50 years for the cancer to develop.

In rare cases it has been associated with the inhalation of other fibrous silicates, irradiation and thorotrast (intrapleural thorium dioxide). Most commonly however, it is felt that asbestos is the main cause.

The initial appearance is one of multiple tumor masses. The outside area is usually much more affected than the visceral or inner surface area. The lower lobes of the lungs are generally the ones that are affected and it is believed that this is due to gravity. The right lung is more frequently diagnosed also with the larger size of the lung believed to be the reason.

Usually a diagnosis is not made till there are large numbers of the tumors within the pleura. As secondary cancer malignancy pleura mesothelioma can occur from metastasis from the breasts, sex gland or intestines. Lymphoma can also increase the risk of mesothelioma.

Symptoms

Initially the patient may complain of chest pain. Often the complaint is not of chest pain, but rather of shoulder or abdominal pain. The patient can become short of breath. Cough develops and weight loss due to anorexia, loss of appetite also can be present. Pleural effusion, fluid on the lungs, is also common with this type of mesothelioma. Often the fluid buildup will also be in the abdomen and be a pronounced ascites. Often that buildup of fluid is the first major complaint that the patient has.

Fatigue, anemia and blood in the sputum will also be indications of the disorder. It is possible to feel a mass in the abdomen and have difficulty with bowel movements.

Blood clots can develop in the veins. Low blood sugar and jaundice are listed as symptoms. The patient is also more likely to develop blood clots in the lungs.

Prognosis

Mesothelioma has a bleak prognosis. Some studies have shown that the average survival rate after positive diagnosis is about eight months. Other factors also are taken into consideration. The overall survival rate can be affected by the particular type of mesothelioma cells are present. Biphasic cells have proven to be the cells that will result in the reduced survival time.

Hay fever interrupts millions of lives annually.  Whether the disruption causes loss time from work, school or just living life, it causes a ton of misery.  But knowing how to manage it can be the first step towards being able to survive the season in good shape.

Here are the most common triggers, the various ways the condition may display, and suggestion for effectively managing the problem.

Causes—This is a condition that occurs in the fall of the year, and is mainly triggered by airborne weed pollen.  Many of the most prolific pollen producing plants grow in the summer and by fall are sending grains of pollen airborne to the tune of over one million per plant.

Ragweed pollen is one of the most dreaded of all the fall allergy triggers, even though there are others that also cause problems such as curly dock, lambs quarters, pigweed, plantain, sheep sorrel and sagebrush.  Because the pollen is so light weight, it can be easily carried indoors through open windows and doors.

It also catches a ride indoors by attaching to hair, clothing, pets, and packages.  It is easily available for inhalation as you move about and cause it to go into the air.  Once enough has gathered indoors, an allergy attack is almost inevitable.

Symptoms—The usual symptoms include coughing, sneezing, congestion, and post nasal drip caused by the excess mucous the body produces.  And whereas these are also symptoms that a cold presents, cold symptoms usually run their course and are gone in 5 to 7 days.

Because hay fever is triggered by airborne pollen, symptoms can persist for as long as the allergen is able to enter the body.

Solutions—The good news is that there are a variety of ways to effectively maneuver through the fall allergy season, and here are a few.  Keep abreast of the pollen count in your area.  Plan indoor activities on days the count is high.

If you must be out on days when the count is predicted to be high, go before 10 in the morning and after 4 in the evening to minimize exposure.

There are over the counter medications and prescription drugs that an allergist can prescribe.  Explore your options carefully and you may find that some combination of each type of medication (prescription and OTC) will work while still allowing you to be alert and energized.

And probably the least invasive way to reduce hay fever triggers indoors is to filter the air with a medical grade HEPA (high efficiency particle arresting) air purifier specifically designed to eliminate the allergy triggering pollen so the need to treat the symptoms is virtually eliminated when indoors.  HEPA filtration creates a clean space that will literally allow you to catch your breath.
